What My Black Belt Means To Me by Priya Rao

Teaching and Learning on the karate black belt Journey

“Short-one” This is what I will be saying when I become a karate black belt. My black belt means to me that I am one step closer to becoming a full sensei, I will have something that most people I know don’t have, and I can continue learning new karate techniques such as self-defense and katas. That is what my black belts means to me.

To begin with, my black belt means that I am one step closer to becoming a full sensei. What I mean by that is that I will be able to instruct classes all by myself, like how Sensei Andrew and Sensei Bryan and Sensei Justin teach karate. They teach karate AND learn karate at the same time. Sensei Andrew and Sensei Bryan take classes just like all the kids do. That is what I want to do. When I become a karate black belt, I will be able to teach the “Dragons” and “Tigers” so that they can learn karate, too.

Gaining Experience and Reaching New Levels

I will also have more experience in teaching all the little kids learn karate and more experience in karate, overall. Finally, I will be able to get my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th degree black belts and all the degrees after that. I think that almost everybody who joins karate has a goal to become a black belt, because when I was a white belt a couple of years ago, I used to look at the advanced class (the class I am in right now) and think “How do those kids do that? That must be really hard.”

I thought that what they were doing was impossible. And now I am testing for my black belt (which is even harder). My black means to me that I am one step closer to becoming a full sensei.

A Unique Achievement and Ongoing Learning

Additionally, my black belt means that I will have something that most people I know (not in karate) don’t have (a karate black belt). Many people I know don’t have black belts but even more I know people don’t even do karate at all but it will be cool to show them my black belt.

I know a couple kids from karate and outside of karate and two of them are black belts. Also, I will have something unique. Like I said earlier, not everybody has a black belt.

Lastly, not everybody even gets the chance to test for a black belt. This is significant because I will have something special. My black belt means to me that I will have something that most people I know don’t have.

Beyond the Black Belt: Unlocking Advanced Techniques and Lifelong Learning

Furthermore, my black belt means that I can keep on learning new techniques in the karate black belt curriculum. When I go to black belt prep class, I see the black belts do their self-defense and katas and I think that it will be very cool to learn. I can learn the full versions of all the self-defense techniques that I have learned in my years from white belt to black belt, such as Dragon Tail, Tiger Take Down, and Shackle Break I will also learn the more sophisticated and complicated katas and self-defense.

This is prominent because even though I will be getting a black belt doesn’t mean that I have to stop learning new techniques. My black means to me that I can keep on learning new techniques in the black belt curriculum.

As you can see, my black means to me that I am one step closer to becoming a full sensei, I will have something that most people I know don’t have, and I can keep learning new karate techniques like self-defense and katas. This is what my karate black belt means to me.
